THE STORY: | |
| This one was pure-self indulgence: rather than stick to the tried, true and respectable, I went ahead and did what every excited newbie longs to do: I played with as many of the advanced tools available in my video editing program as I could (pan & crop, filters, different shaped cross-fade paths, still images, repetition, slow-mo, translucency) with wild abandon. The lulling ebb and flow of this song seemed pefectly dream-like to me, and the opening lyrics reminded me of the beach-dream Buffy has at the beginning of season 3, and with those 2 inspirations, I was off and running, revisiting some of the major shippy B/A moments. Don't expect it to make much sense or be very meaningful, that wasn't really high on my agenda...everything was about mood and fx | |

as the sun was set and the pieces of light touch your hair perfect love come softly with the dawn, the dawn city once full of people desolate, is desolate we look back in to the ruins where we played at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky sky touch your hand you touch the back of my neck so many empty nights just waiting for this, for this standing there all heading downsteam unsteady island we hear nothing, nothing at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky at least we were together holding hands flying through the sky sky | |
FEEDBACKcolours writes: I thought Sleep Alone was gorgeous, but of course it's 'deathly shippy' - it's romantic slush ;o) I'd loved your mp3s for ages, largely because they're so creative rather than just being clips placed one after the other - and so I'm very glad that your music vid (I've only watched the one so far because I'm scared of too much spoilerness as I'm a UK viewer) is similarly artistic. Stick with the FX :oD devilbunny writes: And Sleep Alone--can I just say wow? I was absolutely mesmerized throughout the entire thing, which stunned me because of the repeated scenes and fairly repetitious song. Normally I would make a point to avoid something with those attributes, but you made it sing. Just, again, wow. It's always so much fun to come across vids that go beyond simple fandom and turn into artistic stories all their own. Beautiful work. :] JainieG writes: Sisabet recced this vid today and I downloaded it along with the other two and let me just say, I am amazed! I loved the Lilah/Wes vid (I think my secret heart of hearts is a L/W shipper) and had a lovely giggle at the Monty Python vid, but I have to agree with devilbunny - Sleep Alone is just beautiful. So dreamy and mesmerizing. Admittedly, it took me a few seconds to get used to the style of the vid - since, as you say, it's not exactly 'traditional' in it's approach - but once I got into the rhythms of it, I was just swept away. I'm not really a B/A fan, but you managed to capture the relationship beautifully with Sleep Alone. Very well done - keep up the good (no, exceptional would be a better word) vidding! Here's Luck writes: Sleep Alone," though, is a whole different level of interesting. It makes use of all the neat stuff you do in your other genres of fanart, and I love that. I realized less than a minute in that in some ways it's very much like the sound collages you do: taking a few crucial lines (or, in this case, scenes and images), combining them to show the connections between them, messing with them (repeating them, spinning them, altering them in some way), and then recombining them into something quite different. I love the way it works in the sound mixes, and I love it here too, not least because you've made a vid that just looks really different from any other vid I've seen, but also because it fits so well, structurally, with the theme-and-variations structure of the song itself. The recurring extreme-close-up of Buffy both grounds the vid and establishes a sense of motion-without-getting-anywhere that works really well with the dreamy-yet-minimalist music (and, my god, could I *use* any more hyphens in that sentence?). I liked the repetition of B&A on the beach, which eventually is joined by the bedroom scene from "Surprise"... The repeated clip of Buffy kissing Angel's ring, which goes to the beach but then to the dark shot of Buffy (with lights shining through her! -- neat effect--I like how you've sneaked all your Photoshop skills in here too). All the closeups of the ring itself... the snow in "Amends"... the images just keep accumulating and combining... I do like the choice to break away from that strategy long enough to introduce a new constellation of images: the Tai Chi scene, and then Buffy's dream. It gives the vid some forward momentum in the middle, and then allows you to *come back* to the original images, layering them back in with the new stuff. Wow. Like I said, I've never seen a vid done this way. I was really *interested* throughout the whole vid, and since I've never really felt the B/A luv, that's pretty unusual. Jewel writes: wow @ sleep alone, i just dl it and i've watched it more than four times already. i disagree with what you say: it is meaningful. damn i almost cried. and it wasn't just wonderful in it's b/a shippiness, but also in the artsy- smartsy way, like i always wished all music vids would be. pls pls pls do some more this way, it turned out so perfect. Son of Ripper writes: I've been taking a look at the various vids, and I've downloaded slayerhood. One word: excellence. Wait...change that. Excellence to the power of ten. You're very talented, and I'm not one to throw that word around lightly. I can't wait to see what vid you'll turn out next, but trust me, I'll be looking for. oralfxatn writes: Sleep Alone... Incredible, breathtaking, gorgeous. Sorry for the drama, but it really did move me to feel so many things. The music and visuals kept me mesmerized and your talented editing skills simply amazed me. I'm not a Buffy/Angel lover by definition, but your amazing vid may have made me one. Seriously, it was just so good that I had to tell as many people as I could about it. My favorite vidder in the whole wide world has it on her vid recs section of her website, and I finally took a look at some of her recommendations...thank god for heres luck! I'm not savvy to all of the technical skills involved, but I am savvy to the end result...Also, did it convey something to me AS I was watching it? Did it move me? Was I happier for having found it? Uh, yes. In spades. I can't wait to spend an evening looking at all of the things that you've done. If this is any indication of the talent you have, then I KNOW it will be worth my time...and the time of all the people I will send your link to. I have to say (again, not technically savvy, here) that the grainy visuals suited the music, the repeated shots of Buffy's face close up (her gorgeous eyes, wow); or walking on the beach...the clips you chose of them running in the rain, walking in the snow, the stars in the background, kissing the ring...Angel touching her back (with Buffy looking so utterly vulnerable), sitting on his lap, kissing...her face, her face, her face, the ring, the ring, the ring, the stars...it gave me the feeling I get when I watch an old 70's Italian film. I love that genre, I find that it evokes a haunting dreamlike quality for me and I love that. Thank you, Vrya, for your incredible talent. You're a shining star in a sky full of vidders. Again, excuse me for the drama. Best regards, Oralfxatn Katie writes: hi how do i download your videos so i can see them Lisa writes: Just downloaded this vid and it was beautifully done.
